Some recommend licensing essays under the CC BY-ND license. I don't follow this advice because the "No Derivatives" clause forbids inclusion in other works and translations, both of which are important for popularising ideas. Moreover, while many people say that the "No Derivatives" clause saves you from "putting words in your mouth," I believe that it doesn't. People with bad intentions usually don't care about copyright status of a text. For them, it makes no difference whether the work is fully copyrighted, licensed under CC BY-ND or any other license — their bad intentions will still be realized. Instead, by releasing your work under a license like CC BY-ND, you are limiting well-meaning people!
Therefore, I advise you to release your works, including essays, under free licenses (such as CC BY-SA, CC BY, or even CC0!)
